Located in Toronto, Ontario, the new Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto is a redesign and fit-out of the 10th floor at 700 University Avenue. Commissioned by the University, the project’s aim is to provide updated office accommodations for staff and student body while the Faculty of Arts and Science continues to develop a long-term plan for new builds.

Close collaboration with the University was essential to understand the ongoing plans for the school’s new build program and the challenges faced in accommodating the new Data Sciences Institute.  In addition to extensive stakeholder consultation, the design team explored several alternate design approaches with significant focus maximizing natural light and introducing features that support occupant well-being while optimizing floor area efficiencies. 

A key design challenge was finding a solution that provides staff and students with maximum programmatic flexibility to meet the ever-changing and high demand needs of the space. Integrated AV, IT and power outlets were recessed within a new raised floor and new wall partitions. Moveable partitions act as displays for learning and working while allowing users to configure the floorplan to meet their needs. 

The design includes a combination of collaborative student learning spaces, workstations and private offices arranged to ensure maximum exposure to natural light. Shared spaces including seminar and meeting rooms, common lounge area, kitchen, work rooms and interview rooms offer programmatic flexibility and encourage collaboration within the student body.
