The former campus of national bank ING is slowly transformed into a new vibrant
neighborhood. The neighborhood is focused around the concept of living in the park, hence its name Westerpark West. Elephant introduced Basil, a semi-enclosed housing type to the park.

Elephants Basil combines a high density building block with our coreless housing typology. Whilst the preceding neighboring housing blocks are solely extraverted, Basils four buildings are composed around a courtyard. Offering each apartment the qualities of both the vibrance of the city as well as the tranquility of the perimeter block.
Basils buildings are constructed out of 96 structures, which resemble neatly stacked tables.
Function, safety, and privacy is combined into one clear architectural element. Each architectural table consists of two apartments and the adjacent outdoor spaces. It forms the main supporting structure of the building and the terraces. The tabletop functions both as the closed parapet of the house and the balustrade of the terrace.

It ain’t easy being green. The tables are clad with leaf green mineral stone slidings. Each manually applied to create an almost seamless gesture. The tables each vary in color and sliding density. Grounding the structure with more heavy tones, and ending the building with lightness.

Our patented building typology Coreless is the key to both the high quality of the apartments and the unique efficiency of the building. This is possible because two homes share a lift stop as their entrance, freeing the private outdoor spaces to increase the quality of each residence.

Parametric design. Elephants in-house parametric design tools generate data-driven design principles. Using these, high urban density can be achieved in combination with a unique high quality of living.
