Rijeka City Library

The reconstruction of the T-building for the Rijeka City Library is a key part of a project aimed at revitalizing the former Rikard Benčić industrial complex into a new cultural district. Originally constructed in the late 19th century for a cigar factory, the building later became part of the Rikard Benčić ship engine factory.

The T-building is a notable industrial structure, showcasing characteristic design features of its era, including a stone masonry frame and cast-iron columns in its interior. The façade is enhanced with prefabricated brick elements. Due to its proportions and architectural articulation, the building is now recognized as an important landmark within the surrounding urban fabric. The primary goal of the reconstruction was to preserve the building’s original form while modernizing the structure. The southern wing, known as the "leg," suffered significant structural deformations due to subsidence and was therefore removed and replaced with a new structure.

The new structure is a stylistic replica of the original, maintaining identical proportions and façade design. The façade is constructed from prefabricated glass-concrete elements, suspended on a steel frame. The interior is minimalist, featuring visible façade cladding and a load-bearing steel structure. The building’s original industrial character is further highlighted by an automated book sorting system.

The remainder of the building was restored to its original design. The entrance on the southern side, through the "leg," is at ground level, while the northern entrance is accessed via a new steel bridge, which also leads to the building's service area on the east. Steel bridges and staircases guide movement through the building.

The layout of the library’s interior and the arrangement of materials reflect the library’s role in contemporary society. The materials are displayed in an open layout, and the library spaces are organized to serve as a city’s living room, creating a welcoming environment for the community.
